Time to take another look at Portugal

In June of 2011 the Global Commission on Drug Policy, a 19-member panel of world leaders, issued a report saying that “the global war on drugs has failed.”

Conventional wisdom on drug policy, however, has not yet caught up with the dominating opinion of our world’s leaders. Yes, a majority (55%) of Americans now support legalizing marijuana, according to a recent poll by Angus Reid Public Opinion. But, while marijuana legalization in the United States is certainly a step in the right direction to a more sensible global drug policy, being only in favor of marijuana legalization instead of decriminalizing the possession of all drugs is kind of missing the point. In the same Angus Reid Public Opinion poll, researchers found that when asked about legalizing other drugs (cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and ecstasy), none had more than 10% support from Americans.

LEAP Officer (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) Larry Teller interviewed by Fred Martino of KRWG, Las Cruces, NM Aug 12, 2010

Larry Teller was a guest of  PAJOLL during our second year of running a booth at the Otero County Fair in Alamogordo, NM  where we talked with  an estimated thousand Fair visitors about the failed drug war and the importance of Treatment instead of Incarceration for non-violent drug offenders.  We handed out what seemed like about eighty pounds of material, most of which was donated by the Drug Policy Alliance.

The Fair was attended by 18,619 visitors for the last three days, according to the official “entrance count”.

Fred Martino of KRWG 90.1 in Las Cruces, NM hosted a debate this morning from 9:00 to 10:00 between CD-2 Congressman Harry Teague and congressional candidate Steve Pearce on the topic of “Border Issues” . The results were foreseeable and unsurprising, adroit avoidance by the debaters of the well crafted questions of the moderator, Mr. Martino. It was akin to herding cockroaches.

After 58 minutes of substance avoidance by the candidates, Mr. Martino brought up the connection between border violence and the drug war. Pearce and Teague, good Republicans all, both side-stepped, emphasizing their toughness on crime of all sorts and vowed to increase militant and legal punitive actions against the drug cartels and drug users. No mention of the toxic effects of drug prohibition or the failed 40 year old war on drugs.

I want to thank Mr. Martino for his good intentions. You really can’t make a purse out of a sow’s ear.

Meet our guest speaker, Larry Talley, from Law Enforcement Against Prohibition!

Larry S. Talley served in the United States Navy from 1987-2007 as an intelligence specialist and was stationed at Naval Special Warfare Unit Eight in the Republic of Panama from 1991-1996. While stationed in Panama, Larry deployed frequently to various locations in Central and South America in support of counter-drug operations, where he formulated and implemented eradication strategy in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency and with many countries in the region.

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition is made up of current and former members of law enforcement who believe the existing drug policies have failed in their intended goals of addressing the problems of crime, drug abuse, addiction, juvenile drug use, stopping the flow of illegal drugs into this country and the internal sale and use of illegal drugs. By fighting a war on drugs the government has increased the problems of society and made them far worse.
